Speaker: Katherine Scott Sturdevant
Professor of History, Pikes Peak Community College

Topic: The Cripple Creek Mining Strike of 1904

The labor strike of the Western Federation of Miners in 1904 in Cripple Creek was one of the most dramatic strikes in history. During the strike, John Harper, the president of Victor Miners' Local No. 32, was imprisoned, tortured, beaten, kidnapped, and deported for his activism. Harper's great-granddaughter, Katherine Scott Sturdevant, will present an illustrated narrative of his life. In her presentation, Kathy integrates archival research, historical analyses, family oral tradition, documents, artifacts, and personal recollection to share a rich experience of our local history.

Katherine Scott Sturdevant, great-granddaughter of miners' union leader John Harper, is Professor of History at Pikes Peak Community College, where she has taught history since 1986. As a teacher and speaker, Kathy's specialization include American social, Colorado, western, women's, Pikes Peak regional, and family history. She is a well-known local and national speaker, active in the local history community, author of two books on the scholarly approach to doing family history, and has won local, state, and national awards for teaching excellence.
